Welcome to WINTR!
What is WINTR?
WINTR is an organization established to promote international gender equality in neurotrauma research. WINTR is an organization for all individuals interested in these aims, regardless of gender. We appreciate a wide diversity of ideas and opinions to help the organization successfully meet its goals.
WINTR accomplishments:
- the establishment of a Luncheon Lecture Series held each year at the national meeting. Illuminating lectures have included “Time Management for Professionals in Science and Medicine” (Lois Nora, M.D., J.D.,Dean, Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine), “Profile of a Successful Career in Neurotrauma Research” (Lisa McKerracher, Université de Montréal, PhD, Esther Shohami, PhD, Hebrew Univ Sch Pharm; Lisa Schnell, PhD, Univ of Zurich), and “Human Embryonic Stem Cells” (Jane Lebkowski, PhD, Geron Corporation). Recent luncheon lectures have focused on grant writing, beginning with “Writing the Perfect R01 Abstract” (David Armstrong, PhD, NIH), and followed by “Writing the Perfect Specific Aims Page” (Phyllis Wise, PhD, University of Washington). This year we will continue with this program; our guest speaker will be Dr. D. James Surmeier, Ph.D., Nathan Smith Davis Professor and Chair, Department of Physiology, Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University, who will discuss: “Writing the Perfect Analysis, Potential Problems, and Solutions Portion of your Grant”. We are looking forward to obtaining tips about this crucial portion of writing a successful grant application.
- a WINTR Award for outstanding accomplishments by a woman in neurotrauma research, given at the awards ceremony of each NNS meeting. Previous recipients have been: Helen Bramlett (1998); Kimberly Statler (1999), Fiona White; (2000), Gwen Schwartz (2001), Brenda Bartnik (2002; 2004); Pamela Callaghan; (2003), Kristy Kiegerl (2005), and Christine MacDonald (2006).
- a WINTR website on the NNS web page to keep you up to date on events and activities;
- a Members Booth set up at the national meeting to obtain WINTR ribbons for your badge and to register to become a member,
- a growing Business Meeting (“WINTR-brain-Storms”) to offer your creative ideas and suggestions for improvements to WINTR, and
- an Annual Newsletter to inform you of the activities related to WINTR, to highlight accomplishments, and to inform members of new and valuable opportunities in neurotrauma research.
- and last but NOT least, the WINTR Mentoring Program!
